Israel/Palestine. Tom-A-to, to-mah-to 70 years ago they were the same thing. So we fucked up! When we gave in to the Zionist terrorists, it was the same era in which we invented the global credit. We were all about the quick solutions, the free market, and the idea that simple people had simple needs. International law? We write on a napkin over a brandy. Can you imagine taking the argument "I want my own country and we like this country. There's some history there for us, these people they can't defend themselves, teel you what how about we shift em for you to make space. We'll take care about it forget about it." I have ancestors who may have traded on the silk road. It is my heritage. My family want Kathmandu!
I believe we have a complex of seeing Israel as more modern, westernised, logical and developed. I don't know if this is just racism. against the Arab Palestinians who seem so alien to us. Thus we hold Israel to a higher standard . I personally can't forget that Israel is a young nation, driven from it's conception by racially motivated paranoia and is a complete military nation. It has full conscription is led by charismatic military leaders and has NEVER been called to use it's atomic-age IVF defensively (Pre-emptive war is not a defensive strategy, it's an assault). It treats Palestinians as persona non grata in THEIR country, even in their original birthplace. Now a citizen may see a sweet housing estate, newly built by their state, which then gets shelled by terrorists and criminals. I see people conned into expecting a modernity, society and seurity that is not yet theirs. Of course they want a Jewish nation and are smug about the prospects of keeping it and stuff you if you disagree.
This is because their state is non existent. Their is organisation and their is power but their is not a state. How about applying classical theory. A state has full control on legitimate violence. Hamas has some legitimacey in the eyes of a decent number of people who are part of Israel, but must know that despite being there only option it is a direction which begats violence. Israel has legitimacy but no moral or legal defense for their muderous incursions into Lebanon or Gaza. Within my scope, there are no states involved so, regardless how have some think to have it described, this is not a cold war. [Can you have a cold civil war?.]. It is a cycle of crime, revolt and opression that has no rooting in any quest for a justified and democratic statehood. The emotions exhibited in actions and words I see in the press are fear, tribalism (there's a difference between a nation and a prejudiced, and evolving, mob mentality), intolerance and short-termism.
The problem I see is the culture shock and disparity. What we see in Britain as a class war of two different lifestyles wedged together is given religeon, walls, skin colour and a intractable history. Are Palestinians . Western people; Rachel Corrie, Tom Hurndall, James Miller lost their lives standing next to Palestinians. Would Hamas stop their shelling if young Western Muslims who believed in peace roamed in Israeli villages south of Tel Aviv. Would they be welcomed? I can see people evolving a way of living together and even having a asingle state where Palestinians go home. Years down the line. The two state solution doesn't even approach holy sites? So how about we make Jerusalem an international city of pilgramage. No dictated rules or limits, no access issues. People work, worship and hopefully in a co-ordiated rebuilding of the West Bank you can achieve prosperity for all. Course it won't happen, but people have to try.
So where does this accepting culture and developed polity come from? Only two countres have manufactured these succesfully from scratch IMO, being the US and China. The US had a common enemy (King George III), and developed unity from complete disparity through true geniuses who captured a public mood and never let it go. China's strength since imperialism has come through crushing dissent physically rather than culturally ostracising the non-patriotic, and this is less reccomended. Both are riddled with corruption and ideology- the dogma of the brain and may have been helped by indominatable resources, but from the passion and constructs of founding planners the state was manufactured. What is suitable for a Jewish/Muslim nation/ dual states? Well we'll never find out unless democratic (ie not liberal, but selected by the populace as charachters of excelling public service and competence) individuals from the area to stand up for public good and develope a structure for cohabitation and the more subversive foundation of trust and to drive it home, some peace!
